Austin Jeffrey Farley, a 26-year-old Irvine resident was formally charged Wednesday with murder for last week’s deadly car crash that killed 14-year-old Ashton Sweet.
The charges against Farley stem from a deadly Memorial Day weekend crash, which seriously injured four girls, including 14-year-old Ashton Sweet. Sweet, a Northwood High School freshman cheerleader suffered irreversible brain damage in the collision.
Sweet was declared brain dead, but was kept on life support so her family could arrange for her organs to be donated.
Farley was alleged to have a blood-alcohol level that was 2.5 times over the legal limit. He was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, with a sentencing enhancement for intentionally and personally inflicting and causing great bodily injury.
Farley, who pleaded guilty in 2009 to a misdemeanor DUI charge, is being held on $1 million bail.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years to life in state prison If he is convicted.
